TOP FIVE RICHEST FILIPINOS 2013

Forbes recently released a compilation showcasing Philippines 50 richest businessmen. Nothing much was changed compare to last year. We still got the same high profile personalities except for seven new comers including Jorge Araneta (Lopez Holdings) , Carlos Chan (Liwayway), Michael Romero, Walter Brown, Ramon Ang, Alfredo Yao, and Edgar Saavedra. The net worth of these"billionaires" were determined by compiling the market values of individual's shareholdings (excluded those unlisted assets). Listed below are five of the richest Filipino businessmen.

TOP 5 RICHEST FILIPINO 2013
"JOHN GOKONGWEI JR"
Net Worth : $3,400 M
John Gokongwei Jr is a Filipino-Chinese businessman who is known for being the chairman of the JG Summit Holdings (one of the largest conglomerates in the Philippines). Companies that JG Summit Holdings has major holdings in include Digital Telecommunications Philippines and Cebu Pacific. Other companies include Universal Robina, Robinsons Land (and Malls). Just to give you some sort of inspiration, John Gokongwei was born in a wealthy family but their fortune was lost when his affluent father died. He started his business career during World War II, buying and selling rice, clothing and scrap metal. JG's ranking went down a spot from being fourth last year to fifth spot this year.

"ENRIQUE RAZON JR"
Net Worth : $4,500 M
Enrique Razon Jr is the chairman and CEO of International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI)that provides container port terminal services in Manila, Subic, Batangas, General Santos City, Poland and Brazil. Razon invested an additional USD200 million in Bloomberry Investments Holdings, Inc. Bloomberry is just one of four gaming companies that were granted casino licenses by the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR). Currently the ICTSI owns 28 ports in 19 countries.  Enrique Razon Jr was placed third last year and went down a spot this 2013.

"ANDREW TAN"
Net worth : $4,600 M
Andrew Tan is a Filipino Chinese businessman who engages in liquor , real estates and fast foods. Andrew Tan runs and owns the Alliance Global Group Inc (AGI) which is generally composed of three companies including MegaWorld Corporation (a real estate company which is dubbed as "best managed company" and "best corporate governance" in the country) ; Emperador Distillers Incorporation (best known for Emperador Brandy) ; and Golden Arches Development Corporation (possesses a franchise of McDonalds). Interestingly, Andrew Tan started as a simple immigrant from China who moved to Manila to study Accounting. In fact , due to economic reasons, he would usually head to school walking rather than riding on public transportation. Tan ranking went up to three spot (from 6th to 3rd).

"LUCIO TAN AND FAMILY"
Net Worth : $7,500 M
Lucio Tan is another Filipino-Chinese Businessman with interests in banking, airline , liquor , tobacco, and real estate industries. The family owns a lot of huge companies in this Philippines including the Asia Brewery (2nd largest brewery in the country), Tanduay Holdings (known for being the world's largest rum makers), PMFTC Inc (largest tobacco company in the country), Univeristy of the East, Philippine National Bank (5th largest bank in the country), Allied Bank , Eton Properties Inc, Allied Savings Bank, MacroAsia Corporation, Air Philippines/ AirPhil Express  and a whole lot more. Lucio Tan's ranking compare to last year was retained.

"HENRY SY AND FAMILY"
Net Worth : $12,000 M
Henry Sy remains the undisputed billionaire in Forbes annual list. Henry Sy is a Filipino Chinese Businessman with interest in retailing, real estate, hospitality, banking, mining and education. He is actually the man behind the SM malls which gave him the title as the Retail King. His businesses includes the SM Prime Holdings (SM shopping malls amounting to 46) , SM Investments Corporation (real estate), Banco De Oro Universal Bank , CBC (Chinabank), Belle Corporation, and Highlands Prime Inc. Henry Sy is definitely an inspiration to many because he was born to a poor family. He immigrated to the Philippines and got his start by selling rejected and overrun shoes from Tondo. He started a small shoe store in Quiapo in 1958 which later became SM Quiapo.
