The Spice Girls are a BRIT Award-winning English girl pop group formed in London in 1994, consisting of Geri Halliwell, Victoria Beckham, Melanie Brown, Emma Bunton and Melanie Chisholm. The girls were signed to Virgin Records and released their debut single, "Wannabe", in 1996. The song went on to spend seven weeks at the top of the UK Singles Chart, and helped establish the group as an "international phenomenon". They went on to release three studio albums and thirteen singles, selling in excess of 55 million records worldwide.[2] The group is one of the most successful and biggest girl groups of all time, due to their increasing record sales, reunion tour, merchandising, record sales in different countries, record breaking achievements, such as Wannabe being the biggest single released by a female group of all time, and iconic symbolism such as the union jack dress, "Girl Power", and their nicknames.

Victoria Beckham, aka Posh Spice, was always a magnet for media attention. However, she was the only one of the Spice Girls to not have a solo on their breakthrough single "Wannabe." As the group continued performing and recording, she received more acclaim for her vocal talents. The media nickname Posh originated from Beckham's elegant bearing and penchant for stylish clothes.
When the group first hit the charts, Victoria Beckham was Victoria Adams. She began dating football star David Beckham in 1997, and they were married July 4, 1999

"GINGER SPICE"
Geri Halliwell, aka Ginger Spice, received her nickname due to the red color in her hair. She left the Spice Girls to pursue a solo career in May, 1998. Her first album Schizophonic, released in 1999, included 3 #1 hit singles. It was also released in the US but only reached #42 on the US album chart. This remains the best US chart performance by any albums from solo Spice Girls

"SPORTY SPICE"
Melanie Chisholm, aka Sporty Spice, received her nickname due to her tendency to wear tracksuits, and, according to the press, a tomboyish look and attitude. Chisholm headed toward a solo career in 1998 recording a duet with Canadian singer Bryan Adams. It quickly hit the UK top 10. Northern Star, the first solo album, appeared in late 1999.

"BABY SPICE"
Emma Bunton, aka Baby Spice, received her nickname due to the fact she was the youngest member of the Spice Girls. She also had a habit of wearing baby doll style dresses. Bunton had some experience in television acting before joining the Spice Girls. Emma Bunton was a replacement for Michelle Stephenson who was a member of the group when they were known as Touch. She did not release a solo album until 2001 after the group's breakup had been announced.
